Based on reports, Thailand maybe rethinking their laws regarding the legalization of marijuana for recreational use, and the reason could be Malaysia.
Thailand was the first country in Asia to legalize cannabis a year ago, but as of recent there have been flouts of reports stating that the Thai government may be rethinking the law, for fear of it going out of control.
Last month, Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin vowed to restrict the use of cannabis to medical purposes only, which threat the roll back of cannabis-smoking culture.
Based on stats, in this year alone, more than 2.4 million Malaysians have entered Bangkok to Phuket, surpassing arrivals from all other countries, including China.
While shopping and food-hunting have been main activities, the nation's progressive attitude toward cannabis has certainly added to the allure of the trip up north for many.
Where Malaysians could face jailtime between 30-40 years for cannabis possession in Malaysia, high-grade weed is openly available for sale up in Thailand.
"Any U-turns by Thailand on the matter would undo the liberalization of views on recreational or medicinal use of the drug in other countries.
"This would deter advocacy efforts in Malaysia, elsewhere and naysayers would say: Look at Thailand", said a fellow Malaysian traveler.
