Yesterday (15 June), a mentally ill man stabbed his own mother to death using a pair of scissors in a flat in Relau, Penang.

To add to the gruesome scenario, the man called his older brother and confessed to his crimes before being caught by police, Sin Chew Daily reported.

According to the Chinese daily, the victim is 67-year-old Cai Yating, and the suspect is her 40-year-old son, the family's youngest child.

According to Northeast district police chief Assistant Commissioner Razlam Ab Hamid, the victim's eldest and second child attempted to phone her but were unsuccessful.

At 5 p.m., they received startling news from the culprit, who admitted to stabbing their mother using a pair of scissors, causing her death.

The suspect's brother then informed the police, who arrived on the scene and apprehended the offender on the spot.

Razlam went on to say that the offender would visit the flat three times a week and spend the rest of her time in Batu Maung with her eldest child.

"The suspect had threatened to kill all his family members when they were staying together in Batu Maung. He previously received psychiatric treatment at Jalan Perak last year.

"We're working to determine the motive behind the stabbing and the victim's remains have been sent to the Penang Hospital for post-mortem," according to him.

As for the suspect, he was escorted before the Balik Pulau tribunal today as police requested a 7-day remand order to help with investigations, China Press reported.

The matter is currently being investigated under Section 302 of the Penal Code for murder. According to Section 302 of the Penal Code, whoever commits murder shall be punished with death.
