Ah Long Set Fire To Malaysian Family's Home After Son Takes His Life Over RM1.6k Debt

A grieving family in Kepong is desperately pleading with loan sharks to leave them in peace after their home was attacked with a Molotov cocktail, escalating their nightmare caused by an alleged unpaid debt. The debt, reportedly tied to their son, not only led to the destruction of their home but also pushed their 27-year-old son, He Wen Jie, to take his own life.

In a press conference organized by Kepong MP Lim Lip Eng on January 21, He's devastated parents recounted the events that spiraled into tragedy.

The ordeal began on December 17, 2024, when He's youngest brother informed their father of a Facebook post alleging that He, who was working in Singapore at the time, owed money to several loan sharks. Concerned, He's father reached out to him for clarification.

He admitted to borrowing S$500 (approximately RM1,648) from a Singaporean loan shark for daily expenses but insisted that others claiming he owed them were scammers. Trusting his son to handle the situation, the father chose not to probe further.

However, two days later, on December 19, the father began receiving threatening calls from loan sharks demanding repayment. Attempts to contact He were unsuccessful. The following day, a chilling call from one of the loan sharks warned that He would jump to his death soon.

Fearing the worst, He's father contacted his son's roommate in Singapore, only to learn that He had left their residence at 4 p.m. and had not returned. Shortly after, Singaporean police confirmed that He had already left the country.

On December 21, the family's worst nightmare became a reality. A call from a funeral parlour informed them that He had fallen from a building in Johor Bahru and succumbed to his injuries in the hospital.

Following He's death, the family's ordeal worsened. Loan sharks continued to harass them with threatening calls and demands for repayment. The harassment culminated in a violent attack on January 18, when a Molotov cocktail was thrown at their home. The attack, captured on CCTV, further traumatized the grieving family.

Speaking at the press conference, He's father described his son as a quiet and honest person. He also stated that the loan sharks failed to provide any proof of the alleged debt.

"We've already lost our son. Please stop tormenting us," the father pleaded tearfully.
