The countrys minimum wage has been raised from RM1,500 to RM1,700. This measure will take effect on February 1 and is expected to benefit 4.37 million employees.
The Malaysian Ministry of Human Resources issued a statement saying that under the latest minimum wage system, employers who employ 5 or more employees and employers engaged in professional activities must pay a minimum wage of at least RM1,700 per month regardless of the number of employees.
For employers with fewer than five employees, they will have a longer adjustment period, with the new standards taking effect on August 1, 2025, to ensure they have enough time to adjust their salary structures and company operations.
The Ministry of Human Resources specifically reminded that all employers must strictly abide by this regulation, and any violators will be subject to legal sanctions. At the same time, the department also emphasized that the minimum salary should not be the starting salary benchmark for all employees, especially graduates, and employees should receive reasonable salary treatment based on their skill level.
Raising the minimum wage to RM1,700 is a positive and necessary measure that will help improve the living standards of low-income groups and also reflects the governments concern and efforts for peoples livelihood and well-being.
