Two family members in Kedah have pleaded not guilty to two charges of possessing more than 1,200 illegal liquor at the Kuala Pilah Sessions Court, today.
65-year-old P. Aplanayara, 65, and his son 35-year-old A Kartik, applied to be on trial after the joint charges were read out by the court interpreter in Tamil before Judge Norma Ismail.
Based on the first charge, both of the accused, on 20th February 2020 at about 9.30 PM in Taman Sri Geligor, Kuala Pilah, knowingly possessed the following prohibited items found in their home, with a total value of RM 3,494.40:
- 480 cans x 500 ml of El Diablo Alc brand beer 12%
- 384 cans x 500 ml King Fisher Al brand bits 8%
- 336 cans x 500 ml Atlas 16 Ale brand beer 16%
- 48 cans x 300 ml Fort Bect -Ale ensms beer 13.8%
For the second charge, both of the accused possessed excise duty goods, which duty was not proven to have been paid, with the value of excise duty involved of RM 13.01 1.60 namely:
- 384 cans x 500 ml King Fisher brand bits Al 8%,
- 336 cans x 500 ml Atlas brand beer 16 Ale 16%
- 48 cans x 300 ml Fort Bect-Ale ensms beer 13.8%
If convicted, they could be fined up to 20 times the value of the goods or jailed for up to five years or both. The court then set bail at RM5,000 for each accused with one surety and March 16th for re-mention of the case.

Although there are no nationwide alcohol bans being enforced in the country, with the exception of Kelantan and Terengganu, and it only applies strictly to Muslims; however to answer that question: yes but only if you're a Muslim.
