A woman and her family's hopes for a satisfying Sahur were dashed when the dried fruit they purchased turned out to be rotten and infested with maggots. The incident came to light when the woman opened the box of dates and began peeling them to remove the seeds, only to discover maggots emerging from the dried fruit.
The victim, Farah Ameera Kamalariffin, claimed she bought the dates at a supermarket near Putatan, Sabah.
"During Sahur today, despite purchasing them yesterday, my stomach feels upset. Why are you (the supermarket) selling items like this? According to the expiry date, it's supposed to be December 28, 2025, she wrote.
"Be cautious; everyone out there, even dates, can't be trusted now."
The woman further revealed that not just one but most of the dates in the box were infested with maggots. Furthermore, she requested an explanation from the date distributor company and the supermarket regarding the quality of the dates sold.
"Please take immediate action, Yusuf Taiyoob, and I request an explanation from S*****y Putatan. I only realized after consuming the fifth date," she said.
Meanwhile, a spokesperson from Yusuf Taiyoob Sdn Bhd (Yusuf Taiyoob) urged the woman to contact them immediately regarding the issue. He said customers can contact them by phone or email for immediate assistance. And that the product can spoil while in the possession of the supermarket.
The spokesperson also mentioned that the dates in Yusuf Taiyoob's warehouses and distribution centres are clean, and they always monitor the quality of their products. He urged customers to contact them for investigation, promising to provide new dates or refund the customer's money.
As of now, the supermarket in question has yet to come out with a statement.
