The Ministry of Health has identified another 2 large cluster that has contributed to the increase of Covid-19 cases in Malaysia, namely a church gathering and a wedding ceremony.
Both the events were held before the implementation of movement control oder (MCO). However, both were responsible for a combined 171 cases.
The church gathering was held from Feb 26 to 28, in Kuching Sarawak. There are 83 people from the gathering tested positive for Covid-19.
There were 2 deaths from this cluster, including the first fatality case in Malaysia, the 60-year-old pastor, who died on March 17.
According to Dr Noor Hisham, 50 cases from the cluster are currently being treated at hospital, while another 25 are placed under the monitor of quarantine centres and only 1 patients were discharged.
While for the wedding ceremony cluster that was held on March 6, at Bandar Baru Bangi, Selangor, has a total of 88 confirmed Covid-19 cases.
According to the Health Director-General, there is one cases from the cluster being treated at the intensive care unit, and no deaths recorded from such cluster.
Dr Noor Hisahm said that : "Both clusters involved at least five generations of Covid-19 infections."
On April 5, the minister also announced another cluster in Kuching, with about 37 people tested positive, 1 under intensive care unit and 5 deaths cases. The cluster started with patient 1,580 who previously had traveled to Italy.
The cluster has infections up to three generations.
Dr Noor Hisham said the two Kuching clusters have been contained and no new infections are expected from both clusters.
He also urged people to not stigmatise those patients who are infected from such clusters, as the main priority now is to trace and treat the disease.
