A 42-year-old engineer was arrested on Sunday after filing a fraudulent police report claiming his Audi luxury vehicle was stolen during a robbery, in an apparent attempt to claim insurance compensation.
According to Rembau District Police Chief, Superintendent Shaik Abd Kadar Shaik Mohamed, the suspect lodged the report at 3:14 AM on Saturday, December 21. In his report, the engineer claimed he was stopped by two unknown individuals at 10:22 PM the previous evening, who allegedly robbed him of his personal belongings and stole his Audi.
However, police investigations quickly uncovered discrepancies in the man's story, revealing that the report was falsified as part of an insurance fraud scheme. Following the investigation, authorities arrested the suspect around 11:45 AM on Sunday at a restaurant in Pedas.
The case is currently being investigated under Section 182 of the Penal Code. If convicted, the engineer faces potential penalties of up to six months in prison, a fine not exceeding RM2,000, or both.
Superintendent Shaik Abd Kadar emphasized that filing false police reports has serious consequences for the community, as such reports create unnecessary alarm and suggest criminal activities that disturb public peace in Rembau. He warned that the police will take firm action against anyone found making fraudulent reports.
