Based on reports yesterday, during a recent Ministerial Question Time (MQT), a Member of Parliament from PAS brought up the issue of censorship, with regards to LGBT and sex-related content on Netflix.
In response to the matter, Communications and Multimedia Minister noted that Malaysian authorities have no power to control content reaching the nation, from abroad.
“To answer your question, we have to admit that we face difficulty (to regulate) streaming services including Netflix.
Netflix is an over-the-top service provider that streams internet-based multimedia content from abroad, and many of the service providers are difficult to be regulated fully”, he said.
Besides that, he also suggested that Netflix in itself take an approach to control content which contradicts cultural values and sensitivities, based on respective countries.
“Currently, what can be done is to have an advocacy plan or action to ensure that there is maturity in choosing the available programs, as our law is only subject to platforms registered and licensed in the country”, he added.
Since the matter though, netizens have been pissed, funny and very realistic about the whole ordeal.
