Authorities have detained a Filipino couple in Pandan Indah for allegedly using counterfeit Malaysian identity cards (MyKads) they purchased two years ago for RM250 each.
The raid, led by the Enforcement Division of the National Registration Department (JPN), was the result of a two-week intelligence operation aimed at cracking down on document forgery syndicates. According to Harian Metro, the couple, aged 40 and 53, admitted to obtaining the fake MyKads from an agent linked to an illegal network operating in Kuala Lumpur.
Originally from Basilan, Philippines, the duo used fraudulent identification documents to secure jobs as security guards and move around the country without detection. Investigators discovered that the pair, fluent in Malay, had also entered Malaysia illegally. They have a child who remains in the Philippines.
The couple now faces charges under Regulation 25(1)(e) of the National Registration Regulations 1990. If found guilty, they could be sentenced to up to three years in prison, fined a maximum of RM20,000, or both.
The suspects are scheduled to appear in the Kuala Lumpur Court today, November 20, as authorities continue their efforts to dismantle the syndicate behind the sale of counterfeit MyKads.
