In an era where young people often gravitate toward office jobs and higher education, Muhammad Hazim Mohd. Akhir is charting a different course. At just 20 years old, he's transforming his family's 16-hectare palm oil plantation into a thriving enterprise, earning RM7,000 monthly.
Hazim's agricultural journey began at age 12, inspired by his father's dedication. "I began helping my father when I was 12. It wasn't just because I was interested in farming but also because I saw how hard my father worked every day from dawn until dusk. That inspired me to step in and help out," he reflects.
While agriculture is often perceived as a challenging and unglamorous career choice, Hazim sees beyond these stereotypes. "Some people think the agricultural sector is too challenging, but if you manage it properly, it's not as difficult as people imagine," he explains. His success proves that with proper management and dedication, farming can be both fulfilling and profitable.
The plantation operates as a well-oiled machine, with Hazim's father overseeing crucial operations from pesticide application to harvesting, supported by two workers. The family maintains consistent productivity through careful pest management, benefiting from stable palm oil prices ranging between RM890 and RM950 per tonne.
What sets Hazim apart is his strategic mindset. He's established a nursery for oil palm seedlings, planning ahead for future replanting needs. His business acumen extends to diversification, incorporating bamboo, pineapple, and banana cultivation, along with livestock farming, to ensure multiple revenue streams.
Rather than pursuing immediate gratification, Hazim focuses on long-term growth. "Right now, I'm putting aside my dreams of owning a luxury car or the latest gadgets. I'd rather use the money to grow my assets. My goal is to own a house and land before I get married," he shares. Most of his earnings are reinvested into expanding the plantation, demonstrating remarkable financial discipline for someone his age.
