KUALA LUMPUR: Police arrested a man believed to be mentally unstable after threatening to kill himself and his wife by cutting the liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) barrel at a shop house at Jalan Semenyih Sentral 1, here, this afternoon.
In the incident at 4.05 pm, a team from the Criminal Investigation Division of the Kajang District Police Headquarters (IPD) rushed to the scene to track down the 34-year-old suspect who was also suspected of being involved in a case of intimidation in the same area on August 28.
Kajang District Police Chief, Assistant Commissioner Mohd Zaid Hassan, said during the raid, the suspect went on a rampage by throwing and breaking items in his house.
He said the suspect also tried to cut the rubber duct of the gas barrel which he placed in front of the door of the house.
"The suspect locked the grille door of the house because he did not want to cooperate with the police, apart from breaking the glass in the house," he said in a statement tonight.
He said, following that, the police asked for help from members from the Semenyih Fire and Rescue Station (BBP) who arrived at 4.45 pm.
"The action was taken after the suspect failed to be persuaded and with the help of firefighters, the police were able to enter the house and managed to arrest the suspect," he said.
On the case of intimidation, Mohd Zaid said, his party received a report from an employee of a delivery company claiming that the man was holding a machete and trying to enter the employee's place.
"The suspect threatened to injure anyone who wanted to fight him, before the employee contacted the police and the suspect then fled," he said.
He said a check found that the married suspect had seven previous criminal records, including drug abuse.
"The case is being investigated under Section 506 of the Penal Code. People with relevant information can contact any nearby police station," he said.
Meanwhile, Semenyih BBP chief, Mohammad Darul Azreen Md Desa when contacted, said a team of nine members with several machines were rushed to the location after receiving a call from the police.
"Upon arrival, we were informed that a man believed to be insane went on a rampage at the premises and threatened to kill himself and his wife by exploding LPG gas.
"Firefighters then managed to open the grille door using special cutters to help the police arrest the suspect," he said.
