Minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture (Motac), Datuk Seri Nancy Shukri said the decision was agreed upon because the government did not intend to extend the temporary postponement of the umrah any longer. However, the new standard operating procedure (SOP) guidelines following the withdrawal of the postponement would be further discussed in detail, including with the Umrah agencies soon.

"The new SOP will be discussed with the Umrah travel agency because we want to make sure that when they return (from the holy land) they (pilgrims) can choose where they wish to undergo their quarantine," she told the media.

Previously, Health Minister Khairy Jamaluddin announced that the government had temporarily suspended Umrah with effect from January 8th due to the spread of Omicron infection.
