Korean convenience store CU Mart in Malaysia joined forces with popular local celebrity chef, Dato' Fazley Yaakob to unveil the latest limited-edition menu for everyone to enjoy.
What makes this menu special is that they have collaborated to stimulate the appetite, by combining the distinctive flavours of Malaysia's favorite ingredients into five dishes.
Laksa Negeri Sembilan, which is made by combining the flavours of lontong and sambal minang, is one of the inventive dishes offered by CU Mart X Datuk Fazley Yaakob's Creation Series Menu.
Other dishes include Pulled Beef Lemak Cili Api Egg Mayo Sandwich, Orange Sambal Nasi Lemak Fish Gimbap, Prosperous Yuan Yang Fried Rice With Sauteed Seaweed Chicken, and Bandung Strawberry Bun.
Doesn't that sound pretty enticing already?
Let's get into detail about each dish:
Pulled Beef Lemak Cili Api Egg Mayo Sandwich
So you know about the egg mayo sandwiches and how it is also a constant favorite of the whole family? But the combination of Pulled Beef Lemak Cili Api Egg Mayo Sandwich is literally an elevated version of the dish, especially when it is eaten hot. Just imagine taking a huge bite into that softness of the bread and when you get to the tenderized meat...it's just mind-blowing.
Laksa Negeri Sembilan
Given that Chef Fazley is from Negeri Sembilan, this is a signature dish of his out of all the dishes on the menu. He enhanced it by blending the flavours of lontong and sambal minang to give you that fiery yet flavorful kick instead of preparing it the way we're all used to. In a thick, creamy, and spicy broth, the noodles are served with taufu pok, egg pieces, tempeh, prawns, and sambal.
Orange Sambal Nasi Lemak Fish Gimbap
With each element representing Chinese New Year, this dish narrates its own tale. This dish was devised by Chef Fazley to enrich the nasi lemak dish to another level. The orange represents prosperity, the rice represents wealth, and the sambal unifies us all, as we should know. In addition to being a dish that is mostly associated with Malaysia, his creative choice of fish as the dish's protein is simply excellent even though nasi lemak is traditionally eaten with chicken or beef.
Bandung Strawberry Bun
This light, fluffy bread is made with Japanese wheat and has the sweetness and aroma of strawberry jam. It has a taste that is reminiscent of Sirap Bandung and melts in your mouth. The beverage that the bun is made from is famous for its flavorful complexity and freshness, especially when coupled with your favourite local dishes.
Although you might not have considered it as a snack, this bun could make you fawn over its flavour and leave you feeling addicted.
Chef Fazley offers the following advice on how to savour the bun:
In order to really appreciate the flavour of the Bandung Strawberry Bun, you should only eat it in a cool room with your eyes closed so you can savour every bite of it.
Prosperous Yuan Yang Fried Rice With Sauteed Seaweed Chicken
Seaweed chicken in this Chinese-Malaysian fusion dish is a delicious combination of flavours topped with fried poppy seeds. According to Chef Fazley, an old folktale about a Mandarin duck that was separated from its spouse and patiently waited for the other to return served as the inspiration for this Yuan Yang fried rice. The duck eventually experiences loneliness since it remained apart from its partner and eventually dies. The rice is served with stir-fried seaweed chicken and spring rolls representing the best of both Korea and Malaysia.
