The National Registration Department (JPN) has been appointed as the primary agency for MyDigital ID pre-registration, a move aimed at strengthening digital identity verification across Malaysia. This initiative is expected to streamline online transactions and improve security for both the public and private sectors.
JPN to Lead Implementation Efforts
Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail announced that JPN director-general Badrul Hisham Alias has been tasked with overseeing the necessary processes and legal framework for the implementation of MyDigital ID. The decision, reported by BERNAMA, was made during the National Digital Economy and Fourth Industrial Revolution Council (MED4IRN) meeting, chaired by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.
Automatic Registration for Malaysians Turning 12
A significant aspect of this initiative is the automatic registration of Malaysians turning 12. Saifuddin highlighted that since JPN holds the most accurate and comprehensive citizen database, integrating MyDigital ID registration with the issuance of MyKad would be a seamless process. This ensures that every eligible citizen is included in the digital identity system from an early age.
Legal Adjustments for Digital Transactions
To facilitate the widespread adoption of MyDigital ID, amendments to the National Registration Act will be introduced. These changes will provide a legal foundation for transactions carried out using digital identification, ensuring their recognition and security within Malaysia's legal framework.
Strengthening Digital Identity in Malaysia
MyDigital ID is part of a broader government initiative to establish a secure and verifiable digital identity system, which has been under development since 2016. This system will serve as a crucial tool for verifying identities in online transactions, benefiting both individuals and businesses.
Despite its potential benefits, the rollout of MyDigital ID has faced delays. Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim previously expressed dissatisfaction with the slow progress of both MyDigital ID and Malaysia's second 5G network project. However, with JPN now leading the pre-registration process, efforts to accelerate the implementation are expected to gain momentum.
The government's push for digital identity verification reflects Malaysia's commitment to advancing its digital economy and ensuring secure online transactions for its citizens.
