Indah Water Konsortium (IWK) Sdn Bhd fends off allegation that the company has polluted Air Selangor’s water treatment plant today, when in fact the Sewage Treatment Plant (STP) was affected by illegal waste discharge by irresponsible parties.
IWK’s Chief Executive Officer, Narendran Maniam said, the releasing of final effluent was halted since last Thursday, 4th November 2020, after IWK detected some element of illegal waste that was dumped into the sewerage system.
“The STP affected had to contain the flow for the past few days to avoid spillage into the waterways. If this was not executed promptly, the illegal element that came into our plant would have had created further detriment to the environment.
“IWK also had to carry out further treatment by using enzymes to neutralise the process. Furthermore, during this period, we had to treat the incoming wastewater offsite.
“When we stopped releasing the effluent last week, our team immediately informed all relevant authorities about the illegal element which came into our plant,” he said in a statement here today.
Earlier, media reported Selangor Executive Councillor (EXCO) Yang Berhormat Hee Loy Sian as saying that the source of the latest case of pollution to Air Selangor’s water treatment plant in Rawang was alleged to have originated from IWK plant in Taman Velox, Rawang, Selangor. “We have lodged a police report about this matter and is now being investigated by the authorities as to ascertain the actual cause of the pollution,” Narendran added.
Narendran also urged all parties to stop baseless accusations, when the effort should be focused on apprehending the perpetrator.
In an immediate response by the Secretary General of the Ministry of Environment and Water, Datuk Seri Ir Dr Zaini Ujang to the media during his visit to the STP mentioned, he also explained that the IWK plant was illegally infiltrated with unknown illegal waste substance in red colour.
