A recent TikTok video has stirred discussion online after a woman known as Shaficida (@shaficida8691) posted footage of a cemetery in Muar, Johor, drawing attention to an unusual sight a grave enclosure decorated with festive twinkling lights.

In the video, which quickly gained traction on the platform, viewers can see the lights hanging from a tree planted on one of the graves. Typically, cemeteries are lit with standard street lamps to ensure visibility and maintain a respectful atmosphere. However, this particular grave stood out due to its colourful, blinking lights more commonly seen in homes during celebrations.

Shaficida expressed her disapproval in the comment section, stating that such decorations were inappropriate for a resting place. "No one has ever done this. Heirs shouldn't decorate with twinkling lights and all that. Heirs should decorate with plants or the like," she remarked.

At the time of writing, it remains unclear whether the lights were placed temporarily in conjunction with the festive season or intended as a permanent fixture.

The video sparked a flood of reactions from netizens, many of whom shared Shaficida's sentiment. Some emphasized the importance of maintaining respect and proper etiquette when visiting or decorating graves.

"This isn't about the heirs or anything. This is about the rules and etiquette when lighting up a grave. Graves should be illuminated with prayers, not lights like these," commented one user.

Others echoed the view that spiritual gestures, such as reciting Quranic verses, are more appropriate ways to honour the deceased.

"As people say, if you miss someone who has passed, its enough to gift them Al-Fatihah or recite Surah Yasin," said another netizen.

While opinions on the matter vary, a portion of the online community voiced concern that such practices might set a precedent, with some urging others not to turn the decorative lighting of graves into a trend.

As the video continues to circulate, the conversation serves as a reminder of the sensitivities surrounding traditions, cultural norms, and the ways we choose to honour those who have passed.
