The results of the 2024 Malaysian Certificate of Education Examination (SPM) were released yesterday (April 24, 2025). A total of 14,000 candidates across Malaysia achieved all A's, including a Chinese candidate who is completely deaf in his left ear.

Lee Wan Lin, who is studying at St. Mary's Chinese Secondary School in Ipoh, has been troubled by hearing problems since she was a child, but she could still hear in her right ear, so she didn't take it seriously. It was not until she received a professional examination in Form 1 that it was confirmed that her left ear was completely deaf. However, this did not stop her from studying hard and bravely pursuing her dreams.

According to Guangming Daily, Li Wanlin revealed that when she learned that her left ear was completely deaf, she was very calm, but her family was more sad. Although she sometimes feels inferior because of this, she believes that hearing impairment is not an excuse to stop learning, and not being able to hear clearly does not mean that you can't learn .

In order to devote herself fully to her studies, she stopped participating in extracurricular activities after entering middle school. Even though she had represented the school in competitions as a member of the school dance troupe in elementary school, she stopped doing that as well.

Because she didn't want to be treated specially, she did not tell the school about her situation at first. After the school learned of her situation, she continued to attend classes like other students.

She usually listens attentively in class and attends online tutoring classes after class. At the same time, she reads the notes and past exam papers left by her cousin to consolidate the knowledge points she has learned.

Before the SPM exam, she felt unwell due to eating the wrong food, but she still tried her best to cope with the exam, especially when facing the Malay and English listening tests. Although she was sitting close to the radio, she could hardly hear it and had to concentrate more on the exam.

Fortunately, she finally achieved 5A+, 4A-, and 1A-, allowing her to continue pursuing her dream. Next, she wants to apply for pharmacy or dentistry at UM, hoping to help those in need.

Li Wanlin hopes that other students with physical disabilities can continue to work hard, because hard work pays off.
