After the viral video of a tourist in KLCC refusing to wear a mask, many netizens were curious as to what punishment she faced for her actions. Well, their questions were answered when PDRM Malaysia shared a press release that she was fined RM 3000.
However, many netizens were unhappy about the fine, saying it was too low. They compared her situation with an occurrence that happened a few months ago where youngsters were fined RM 10k for lowering their masks to their chin.
After a few days of unhappy tweets from netizens, Khairy Jamaluddin, or KJ, Malaysian Health Minister gave an explanation regarding the RM10,000 compound on individuals who did not wear face masks properly.
According to him, the RM10k compound for lowering face mask to chin was issued on March 12 in line with the Emergency Ordinance at that time, which is a maximum of RM10,000 for individual offenses and RM50,000 for organizations.
After the people felt the value of the compound was unreasonable and too high, then the Emergency Ordinance was dismantled. Now, the value of the compound will return to a maximum of RM1,000 for individual and corporate offenses.
