Wanting to know the locals or simply enjoying the “free ride”?
A backpacking couple recently became the subject of scrutiny, after a video of them attempting to hitchhike in Malaysia went viral.
According to their video on TikTok, the duo known as @silkyrontheroad was seen holding up a huge cardboard sign bearing “Taman Negara”, on the side of a highway.
As the couple giddyly danced for the camera whilst awaiting a ride from passers-by, a kind lorry driver apparently offered them one just moments later.
Their act, however, backfired as enraged viewers alluded that they were simply “freeloaders” who wanted to take advantage of our kindness instead.
With the comments section filled with backlash, the couple responded that their intention was only to “get to know the locals”, but many disagreed with their justification.
