According to China Press, a hotel operator in Kelantan has confirmed receiving an official notice from the Kelantan Religious Department (JAHEIK) regarding an alcohol ban two weeks ago. The operator promptly informed non-Muslim customers with upcoming reservations about the restriction to avoid any misunderstandings.
The news has prompted mixed reactions from customers. Some called the hotel directly to seek clarification, while others chose to cancel significant events, such as a wedding banquet planned for next year. However, a portion of the clientele empathized with the hotels predicament and decided to retain their bookings.
"For customers who have already reserved reunion dinner tables for Chinese New Years Eve, we haven't received any cancellation notices yet," the operator remarked, expressing cautious optimism.
Despite retaining some reservations, the operator admitted that the business has been impacted. "One customer who booked three tables for a dinner party is reconsidering their reservation after learning about the alcohol ban. We're still waiting for their response," they added.
The situation has also drawn attention from the local business community. The president of the Kelantan Chinese Chamber of Commerce (KCL) revealed that he had contacted the Kota Bharu City Council (MBKB) for clarification on the ban. However, due to the recent resignation of MBKB's chairman, KCL will need to wait for the new chairman to assume office before receiving an official explanation.
