Based on reports, The Malaysian Animal Welfare Association (SAFM) in KL has called for swift action and a detailed investigation following a harrowing case of animal cruelty in Selama, Perak.
The incident, which occurred on 22 Dec at Ladang Malaya, involved a dog named Kutty, who was fatally injured after being shot with a bow and arrow by a worker.
The attack reportedly took place after the dog strayed into another lane. Kutty sustained severe injuries and later succumbed to them.
In a statement, SAFM strongly condemned the act, describing it as inhumane and urging for immediate action to hold the perpetrator accountable.
“This kind of cruelty is unacceptable and goes against the principles of humanity. Immediate and decisive action is crucial to ensure justice is served”, the association said.
SAFM highlighted that the act violated Malaysia’s Animal Welfare Act 2015 and called on witnesses to come forward to assist in the investigation.
“Reports can be filed at the nearest police station, and complaints to the Veterinary Services Department (DVS) are necessary to initiate legal proceedings against the perpetrator. Witness testimonies are vital to ensure justice”, the statement added.
The group also urged authorities, including the police and DVS, to conduct a thorough investigation and enforce Section 30 of the Animal Welfare Act 2015. The section imposes penalties of up to RM100,000 in fines, three years of imprisonment, or both for acts of animal cruelty.
SAFM expressed frustration over the recurring nature of animal abuse cases despite widespread awareness campaigns. The association attributed the problem to weak enforcement of existing laws, which it said allows offenders to escape punishment.
SAFM calls on the community to stand together in defending animal rights and ensuring offenders face strict penalties. Justice for Kutty is a step toward justice for all animals in need of protection, the group stated.
It also called for stricter legislation and stronger enforcement measures to safeguard animal welfare and prevent similar incidents in the future.
