Not our childhood snacks :(
Hong Kong's consumer watchdog found cancer-causing substances in 60 samples of pre-packaged crackers and biscuits, which contain glycidol or acrylamide, or even both. The products include some of the biggest names in the industry such as Oreo Mini and Hup Seng Special. The substances were higher than the safe limit, they said.
(for illustration purposes)
They've tested 60 different snacks from various brands and found all of them to have contained "genotoxic carcinogens glycidol or acrylamide, while 75 percent of them were simultaneously detected with 3 types of contaminants (glycidol, 3-MCPD, and acrylamide)." (source: The Standard UK) while "85% (51 samples) were classified as “high-fat”, “high-sugar” or “high-sodium” foods." (source: consumer.org.hk)
If you have been regularly consuming these snacks, you are advised to opt for healthier alternatives like fresh fruits, nuts, trail mixes, and such. Unfortunately, the full list of the brands tested wasn't released but if you wish to read further, you can browse through the full report here.
