A Mercedes-Benz was engulfed in flames today on the Sultan Abdul Halim Muadzam Shah Bridge, also known as the second Penang bridge, after striking a car battery that had been left in the middle of the road.
The incident occurred at Km18 on the bridge, heading towards the island, at approximately 3:18 PM. Barat Daya police chief Sazalee Adam confirmed that preliminary investigations suggest the fire was triggered by the vehicle colliding with the battery. Authorities are currently probing how the battery came to be abandoned on the roadway.
Fortunately, the car's two occupants escaped unscathed. A passerby recorded a video of the incident, showing the fire starting at the cars front bonnet. The fire quickly spread, engulfing about 80% of the vehicle, according to a statement from the fire and rescue department.
Emergency services arrived promptly to extinguish the flames, but the luxury vehicle suffered significant damage.
