A 32-year-old logistics company worker tragically died after experiencing breathing difficulties while hiking Bukit Galing near Jalan Haji Ahmad, Kuantan, on Sunday.
The victim, who was hiking with three others, including his nephew, began his ascent at around 9 a.m. Upon reaching the summit, standing 296 meters above ground, he started to experience breathing difficulties and sought assistance from fellow hikers.
According to NST, Kuantan police chief Assistant Commissioner Wan Mohd Zahari Wan Busu reported that the victim appeared weak, prompting another hiker to contact emergency services. Fire and Rescue Department personnel arrived at the scene around 1:10 p.m., where they administered oxygen to the victim before transporting him down the mountain using a stretcher.
While descending, the victim complained of chest pain and eventually lost consciousness. Due to the steep and challenging jungle trail, it took rescuers nearly three hours to bring him to the foothills. Upon arrival, medical personnel pronounced him dead at 7:20 p.m., and his body was later transported to Tengku Ampuan Afzan Hospital.
The victim's family members informed police that he was an active hiker with no known medical conditions. The case has been classified as a sudden death, with authorities believing the victim may have suffered a heart attack.
Pahang Fire and Rescue Department public relations officer Zulfadli Zakaria stated that they were alerted to the situation around 11:50 a.m., and a team of seven firemen from the Kuantan fire station was dispatched to the scene. The Emergency Medical Rescue Services team provided initial treatment at the summit before bringing the victim down to the foothill, where he was handed over to the medical team.
