Seriously, what’s going on?! Why are there so many sinkholes? Some might say the end is near and honestly, at this point, I’m just going to accept it.
I mean there’s an asteroid heading towards earth, we’ve been in lockdown for over two years because of a global pandemic, now sinkholes, so what next?
The road at Jalan Teluk Likas at Kota Kinabalu is temporarily closed to road users due to sediment resulting in a hole or 'sinkhole' in the road.
The incident was noticed by users who saw a pothole on the road at about 12 noon this afternoon and were surprised to find soil deposits.
The incident of sediment to the formation of a hole was successfully recorded by the owner of one of the houses in the nearby area through his closed-circuit camera (CCTV) footage.
Through the CCTV footage, it was seen that a food delivery man also almost plunged into the large hole but managed to stop the motorcycle he was riding before falling to the shoulder of the road.
One of the road users, Masri Zainal, 25, said he was on the road because he wanted to head to Kota Kinabalu from Likas.
“The road at that time was suddenly a bit congested and it looked like there was a motorcycle on the side of the road.
"Apparently there was a food delivery guy got in an accident. Many people at that time thought there was an accident but when I got closer, I was surprised to see there was a big hole," he said when met at the scene.
Another driver, Alvin Tan, 32, said he was on his way from Teluk Likas to Likas Jaya when passing through the road.
“I saw some cars stopped on the side of the road before also stopping my vehicle and saw there was a big hole.
“I hope this damaged road can be repaired quickly as it can endanger road users that pass through this road especially during nights and rainy days.
"Besides that, it can also cause traffic congestion as many members of the public have resumed daily activities such as going out to work and sending their children to school," he said.
Meanwhile, Sabah Public Works Director, Ir Ali Ahmad Hamid when contacted confirmed the incident.
“We have already taken immediate action on this incident and the Globinaco concession company has also been instructed to review the situation at the scene.
"We have also informed this matter to the Sabah Sewerage Services Department as the holes in the area are due to their sewerage assets," he said.
Thankfully no one got hurt but just for future reference, maybe we should all watch the Korean movie Sinkhole for some survival tips. This is the third sinkhole guys and its always best to be prepared!
