A bustling cafe filled with customers is the ultimate aspiration for any food and beverage establishment. However, it turns out that not all customers are a boon, especially when they include unruly children determined to mistreat the star attractions of the café - bunnies. This was the scene at the New Rabbit Cafe in Kuala Lumpur, where the staff found themselves overwhelmed by a crowd eager to experience the eatery with fluffy bunnies as its main draw.
According to a TikTok user going by the handle @_that.artgirl, the café was thrown into chaos as many children ran around, chasing and mishandling the innocent animals. Staff and parents seemed either oblivious or disinterested in maintaining order. Staff members were preoccupied with squeezing more customers into an already jam-packed café, while parents appeared engrossed in their mobile phones, allowing their kids to run wild. In a video posted on TikTok, @_that.artgirl captured the peak-hour frenzy and expressed her concerns on the café's website, only to find that her comments had mysteriously vanished.
She claimed to have filed a complaint with the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) but had received no response as of yet. In response, the New Rabbit Café asserted that its staff had advised parents to supervise their children's interactions with the rabbits. The café also displayed notices with house rules, permitting only gentle petting.
Several issues come to the forefront here. First, the concept of having rabbits freely roam around a food outlet raises questions about compliance with food and health regulations. Despite the undeniable charm of these bunnies, the potential for fur, ticks, and droppings in a café is less than advisable.
Secondly, the behavior of misbehaving children is a reflection of the parents' oversight. Whether intentional or accidental, cruelty to animals is never acceptable. It calls for Malaysian parents to exercise greater control over their children to prevent them from growing up with sociopathic tendencies. The TikTok video serves as evidence, revealing numerous unsupervised children chasing after the hapless creatures.
Lastly, one must ponder the core purpose of a café. While incorporating a petting zoo concept may seem attractive, it is a departure from the traditional notion that a café's main attraction should be its food and beverages. Malaysian food enthusiasts, who take pride in their culinary pursuits, may be wiser than to be lured by such gimmicks.
