Universiti Pertahanan Nasional Malaysia (UPNM) has come under intense scrutiny following a series of alarming bullying incidents, prompting the Yang di-Pertuan Agong, Sultan Ibrahim, to issue a stern ultimatum to the university's leadership. His Majesty urged the commanders and commanders-in-chief of the institution to resign if they fail to curb the abuses, which have tragically resulted in injuries and fatalities.
Expressing his deep sorrow over the incidents, Sultan Ibrahim called for decisive action to end this harmful culture and restore the university's tarnished reputation. Speaking during UPNM's 14th Convocation Ceremony at the World Trade Center Kuala Lumpur (WTC KL), the Agong highlighted the urgency of addressing these issues.
Sultan Ibrahim acknowledged the need for rigorous physical and mental training in shaping military officers but stressed that such practices must not compromise safety or human dignity.
"What is most disheartening for me is that the abuse continues as if no serious efforts have been taken by any party, despite previous cases being brought to court," he stated, emphasizing the pressing need for reform.
The Agong also warned that the ongoing misconduct threatens the core philosophy of UPNM, which aspires to be a leading institution in defense, military, and security studies, underpinned by discipline and military culture.
His Majesty did not mince words in accountability demands from the university's leaders. In a Facebook post, he cautioned that continued abuse would compel him to disassociate his name from UPNM entirely.
"If abuse continues, I do not want my name to be associated with this university any longer. The commanders and commanders-in-chief must also be held responsible and resign for failing to uphold their duties," Sultan Ibrahim decreed.
This public condemnation follows Defense Minister Khaled Nordin's announcement on November 27 that five cadet officers from UPNMs Military Training Academy were dismissed and ordered to pay compensation for their involvement in three separate abuse cases.
The Agong's firm stance underscores the need for comprehensive measures to eliminate bullying and ensure that UPNM fosters a safe, respectful, and disciplined environment.
