Apple Unveils New Robot Inspired By Pixar's Iconic Lamp

Apple has long been secretive about its experimental projects, but every now and then, a fascinating prototype emerges. The latest? A robotic lamp named ELEGNT that behaves more like an animated character than a conventional smart home gadget.

Unlike traditional robotic assistants focused solely on efficiency, ELEGNT is designed to engage users on a more human level. According to Mashable, this innovative prototype doesn't just perform tasks it moves, reacts, and even expresses emotions.

Developed by Apple's Machine Learning Research team, ELEGNT is part of an ongoing exploration of how people interact with expressive versus purely functional robots. This robotic lamp offers a glimpse into a future where AI-powered devices feel more intuitive and lifelike.

For instance, when asked about the weather, ELEGNT turns toward a window before answering, mimicking human behavior. It stretches before reaching across a desk, sways along to music, and even slouches in disappointment when ignored.

These subtle, human-like behaviors create a sense of personality, making interactions more engaging and natural. Instead of feeling like an impersonal tool, ELEGNT brings warmth and relatability to smart home technology.

While Apple hasn't officially announced plans to commercialize ELEGNT, its research suggests that expressive robotics could influence future product development. Bloomberg's Mark Gurman has reported that Apple is planning an ambitious expansion of its smart home lineup, with upcoming releases such as a HomePad smart display, an upgraded HomePod mini, and a new Apple TV 4K.

Additionally, 9to5Mac speculates that Apple may launch AI-driven smart cameras, video doorbells, and even a tabletop robotic assistant by 2026. If Apple integrates ELEGNTs playful and expressive design approach, the next generation of smart home devices may feel more interactive and engaging than ever before.

While not every device needs to sway to music or mimic emotions, Apple's experimentation with ELEGNT signals a shift in how we perceive AI in the home. Rather than being just functional assistants, future smart home devices may evolve into expressive and intuitive companions.
