Careful of spreading the news you received. A food deliveryman was compounded RM 5,000 for posting fake news on his WhatsApp application by the Selayang Magistrate's Court on April 20.
The fake news claims that a worker at a department store had tested positive for Covid-19.
The accused, Azwan Mohd Salleh, 23, was pleaded guilty and was sentenced by the Magistrate Nik Mohd Fadli Nik Azlan.
If he failed to pay the fine, the court also ordered the man to serve a 12-month jail sentence.
The accused was charged with uploading the news with the intention to create fear and panic among the public under Section 505 (b) of the Penal Code which provides for a maximum jail term of two years or a fine or both.
Azwan committed the offense yesterday (April 19), around 7 pm at Desa Jaya, Gombak.
According to the report, the complainant, who was the store employee saw the WhatsApp posting on her friend's phone, saying that an employee at her workplace had tested positive for Covid-19.
