Travelling around Kuala Lumpur on the Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) is about to get a little bit safer for women this coming Monday the 8th of April as the Putrajaya line will begin it's inaugural introduction of the womans coach service, Rapid Rail Sdn Bhd Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Amir Hamdan announced.
With women making up for up to 60 percent of rail passengers, Amir hopes that with this new initiative, it will ensure that female passengers will have a more comfortable and safe journey.
A continuation of the pioneer womens coach service on the MRT Kajang line which began on the 18th of September last year, special pink stickers have already been installed at 36 stations and 49 trains on the MRT Putrajaya line, which will help passengers identify the special coaches located in the middle of each train.
Since its initial introduction, this special service has proven its success with data showcasing that the number of sexual harassment cases reducing on the MRT Kajang line, which has dropped from an average of 3.2 cases to two cases a month, Amir praised at a media conference in KL Sentral here today.
Amir went on to clarify that nearly 300 to 400 passengers will be able to fit in the two womens coaches for each journey and has ensured that a team of volunteer police will also be stationed to conduct periodic checks on the trains and stations to make sure that everyone abides by the rules of usage of the womens coaches.
