Michael Tong Wai Siong never imagined he would become a father to three boys of different races and religions. However, his passion for charity work led him to adopt three Malay boys, significantly changing his life and theirs.
Known as Uncle Mike, the 55-year-old businessman was recently honored with the National Maulidur Rasul Award 2024 at the Putrajaya International Convention Centre (PICC) on September 16. The Yang di-Pertuan Agong, Sultan Ibrahim, presented the award, recognizing Michael's embodiment of Malaysia's multi-racial and multi-religious values.
According to TheStar, Michael's journey began 16 years ago when he met Rafei Ahmad Fauzi, an orphaned Malay boy, at a shelter in Gombak, Selangor. After taking Rafei into his home, he learned about Rafei's two younger brothers. Unable to see them separated, Michael decided to care for all three siblings. Now, Rafei, 29, Rasyid, 28, and Abdul Rahman, 24, have been under his care for nearly 16 years.
I never expected such recognition, especially coming from an ordinary family, said Michael, who expressed gratitude towards his own family for embracing his three adopted sons.
Besides Michael, several other figures were recognized during the ceremony, including Datin Aminah Zakaria and Datuk Kipli Yassin, the Sarawak Mufti. Michaels story of compassion stands as an inspiring example of unity and kindness across racial and religious boundaries.
