Existence of greenery in the bathroom may liven up the ambient of the spaces and make our bathroom not just a place to take a bath but a place for relaxing. Inserting the indoor plants in the bathroom may make the environment of the bathroom more like the natural environment, and the plants will release phytoncides which is proven could help to reduce stress and anxiety. However, the bathroom is high in humidity and low in sunlight. And the condition of the bathroom is not suitable for all the houseplants. Only the houseplants which could fulfil the below criteria are suitable to be placed in the bathroom.
Withstand High Humidity
The humidity in the bathroom is constantly higher compared to other places. However, the house plants placed in the bathroom in high humidity conditions may easily contract powdery mildew disease. Powdery mildew disease is a kind of fungus caused by high humidity conditions, the white powdery will appear on the leaves surface and cause the growth of the plant stunted. Examples of houseplants that prefer high humidity are ferns species, chlorophytum comosum, Aglaonema, pothos and philodendron. All the mentioned species may adapt to the high humidity environment and are suitable to place in the bathroom.
Tolerate Drastic Change of Temperature
When the heater is in use, the temperature in the small space will increase but it will decrease very fast after the heater has closed. Therefore, if you want to place the houseplant near the heater, you should choose the houseplant that may tolerate drastic change of air temperature, like chlorophytum comosum, pothos plants, Dracaena and philodendron. However, if you're not placing it near the heater, you may place any other houseplant which fulfils the other two criteria, because the heater will not cause drastic change of temperature in the overall space in the bathroom.
Tolerate low Light Condition
Bathrooms are a private place and much relate to personal privacy. Therefore, not much sunlight could be reached to the bathroom. Therefore, houseplants which prefer full sun or half shade plants should be avoided. We must choose full shade plants to save effort in moving the houseplant to the outdoors for sun exposure. The examples of full shade plants are ferns species Spathiphyllum, Pothos plant, Aglaonema, Sansevieria,Chlorophytum comosum and ZZ plant. However, sansevieria and ZZ plants do not like the high humidity environment. We should decrease the frequency for watering to avoid plants contracting fungus disease like powdery mildew.
