In an exemplary display of commitment to his students' education, School Principal George Odol of Ulu Ansuan National School has been residing in a school storage room for over three years. His sacrifice reflects the proverb, 'A teacher is like a candle, consuming itself to illuminate others.'
Despite facing various challenges, George, who is set to retire on November 27, has willingly chosen to live in the school's storage room since his transfer to the school in June 2020. His decision is rooted in the absence of proper housing facilities for teachers in the remote area.
The storage room, measuring 2.74 meters wide and 4.87 meters long, has been George's home, as the school was constructed without dedicated living quarters for teachers. Despite the less-than-ideal conditions, George has never regretted his decision to serve in the rural community, emphasizing his commitment to providing the best education for the local children.
"I also have to share the kitchen and bathroom with the preschool class. It's somewhat disheartening for a school principal to live in such conditions for over three years. But as teachers, we have to sacrifice our comfort to come to rural schools for the sake of our students," he remarked.
George's story showcases the challenges faced by educators in remote areas and their dedication to ensuring that every child receives quality education. As he approaches retirement, his selfless act serves as a testament to the lengths some educators go to make a positive impact on their students' lives.
