A man from Melaka has been sentenced to five years in prison after pleading guilty on charges of injuring his 10-year-old stepson on purpose, last week.
32-year-old Ramlan Abdul Karim, who worked as a security guard, made the confession of injuring his 10-year-old stepson with intent using a Yamaha Y15 bike. The incident happened in Kampung Padang i the Central Melaka district on January 7th, at around 11:10 PM. During the incident, Karim and his wife had a predicament regarding their divorce, and the situation quickly escalated.
At one point, overwhelmed by his anger, Karim decided to accelerate his bike and ran over his stepson, who was near the scene.
For the offense, he was charged under Section 324 of the Penal Code and read together with Section 326A of the same code. Karim, who was not represented by a lawyer, appealed for his sentence to be commuted on the grounds that he had regretted his act, apart from having to take care of both his parents.
The Deputy Public Prosecutor, N. Sivashangari, however, appealed for a heavy sentence to be given, after taking into account the age of the victim, who is only 10 years old, and the level of injuries he unfortunately suffered.
The security guard was later sentenced to five years in prison and a fine of RM2,000 or two months in prison if he failed to pay.
