Today, Rapid Rail Sdn Bhd, the company that runs the Rapid KL public train services, stated that as of yesterday (30 April), all of its rail stations accept payments using debit or credit cards.
But hold on a minute, this does not mean that you are able to tap your way in using debit or credit cards, it just means that it is now possible for users of the LRT, MRT, Monorail, and BRT services to top up Touch 'n Go cards, buy tokens, and even subscribe to the My50 and MyCity passes using their debit or credit cards.
So yay for it being at customer service counters but nay for it being at the gantry. (sad emoji)
Previously, customer service counters only used to accept payments via cash or QR codes so it is most definitely a plus in our system to now allow debit and credit cards too.
Especially for travelers!
According to Rapid Rail, the purpose of this new payment option is to improve user convenience and the effectiveness of the purchasing process.
The statement also mentioned how much safer and more effective it is for people to use their debit or credit cards instead of worrying about carrying cash.
And who knows? Soon we may be able to use our debit and credit cards directly at gantries too!
According to Transport Minister Anthony Loke Siew Fook, 50% of the gantries will implement the Open Payment system in February 2025.
