After being the coach of the Malaysian national track cycling team for more than 18 years, John Beasley can finally call Malaysia home!
According to Bernama and Free Malaysia Today, John Beasley, 62, is the coach of the Malaysian track cycling national team and the coach of track cyclist Dato' Muhammad Azizulhasni bin Awang.
He revealed in an earlier interview that he was informed of the good news that he had become a Malaysian permanent resident about three weeks ago.
He said: "I received a call telling me that I had been granted permanent residency in Malaysia. That was the happiest day of my life. I felt accepted and honoured."
He also joked: "I really feel like a Malaysian white man I will tell everyone that I am from Genting Highlands."
"I'm proud of it and I love Malaysia. My wife (Vicky Beasley) loves it here too. I'm learning Malay too. I can follow the conversations the kids (athletes) have, but its hard for me to capture everything (the meaning), but I'm committed to improving."
John Beasley is from Australia. He has been the coach of the Malaysian track cycling team since 2006, but he will become the team's technical director after the 2024 Paris Olympics.
During his time as a coach in Malaysia, he was the pillar behind Azizulhasnis rise from a youngster to a world champion and his two Olympic medals.
When asked about his relationship with Azizulhasni, John Beasley said he was like his "godfather" and that he had been his coach for 17 years and the two had a very good relationship.
