Inspired by Malaysia's rich batik culture and Marvel's legendary villain Venom, local artist Arif Rafhan has launched an enthralling art series.
According to SAYS, the Venom x Batik Inspired Series, created in association with Sony Pictures, uses elaborate batik designs to reinterpret the infamous symbiote Venom. It combines the beauty and vitality of Malaysian traditional textile art with dark, edgy aesthetics.
His artwork combines these two realms, signifying the merging of contemporary pop culture with Malaysian cultural traditions.
"We are immensely honored to collaborate with Arif Rafhan to realize this original idea. For Malaysian audiences, this project is a fantastic illustration of how to combine local heritage with international pop culture phenomena to create something genuinely unique," said Simon Foo, managing director of Sony Pictures Entertainment Malaysia.
"Venom is such a fascinating character with a strong visual identity," Arif said in reference to the project.
The artist mentioned that he wanted to make something that was both familiar and pleasantly unique by combining that with batik, which is very particular to both him and to Malaysian culture - a celebration of both worlds.
