In Malaysia, the wedding tradition of "fetching the bride" involves fun challenges for the groom and his friends.
However, in some parts of China, this tradition takes a disturbing turn resembling a crude farce. The groom's party uses the pretext of "wedding hazing" to engage in destructive and offensive acts, with bridesmaids often being the main targets.
Despite efforts by authorities to crack down on such behaviour, certain regions in China continue to practice these vulgar wedding hazing customs.
Recently, a series of photos on Weibo depicting a disturbing incident during a wedding hazing ritual circulated online. The images showed a bridesmaid, with short hair, seemingly subjected to inappropriate behaviour by members of the groom's party.
She was forcefully held down on a bed, while some individuals appeared to be assisting in restraining her legs. The men proceeded to lift her skirt, exposing her underwear, and one of them even reached toward her thighs.
Outraged netizens expressed their anger upon seeing the photos, condemning the perpetrators with strong words.
Many characterized the incident as a disgraceful act of sexual harassment, with some urging immediate legal action against those involved. The lack of intervention from others present at the scene further fueled the anger.
Online comments criticized the archaic and demeaning custom, stating that it was unacceptable and disrespectful to women. They emphasized the need to abandon such traditions and adopt a more respectful approach to weddings in the modern era.
