This Chinese businessman faced significant financial loss and physical harm after an ordeal at a hotel in Genting Highlands, Pahang, on January 1st. Lang Xiu Tan, 40, shared his harrowing experience, revealing that he arrived for business in Malaysia on December 17th.
"Upon arrival, I headed straight to Genting Highlands without securing a hotel reservation. While at the hotel inquiry counter, I was approached by a group of Chinese individuals who offered to show me properties and even help me obtain a Datuk title," he recounted during a press conference at the Teratai State Assemblyman's Office.
Over the next two weeks, Xiu Tan was escorted around various areas in Genting Highlands, with the group demanding RM200,000 for their assistance. "I paid them in Chinese yuan, but I grew suspicious as they continuously demanded more money, with one individual persistently shadowing me," he explained. On January 1st, they lured him into a car under the guise of taking him for a meal but instead drove him to a residential area and confined him in a guardhouse.
There, he was subjected to physical assault, including being struck with a large barrel and restrained with adhesive tape. "They threatened me with additional demands of RM200,000, threatening to sell me and send me to India if I refused," he added. Xiu Tan managed to escape on January 2nd while the guard was asleep and sought refuge at the Kajang Police Station, subsequently reporting the incident to the Chinese Embassy.
Teratai Assemblyman Yew Jia Haur pledged to request updates on the investigation from the Bukit Aman police, expressing concern over the involvement of security guards in the incident. He emphasized the need for authorities to safeguard foreign business travellers to prevent similar incidents.
