Umno Youth leader Dr. Akmal Saleh is currently under investigation for alleged sedition, as confirmed by Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Tan Sri Razarudin Husain.
The IGP stated that the police are looking into two reports filed against Dr. Akmal, who serves as the Merlimau assemblyman. The investigations are being conducted under Section 4(1) of the Sedition Act 1948 and Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998. Once the investigations are concluded, the findings will be passed to the Attorney General's Chambers (AGC) for further legal action.
Earlier, Dr. Akmal had mentioned in a Facebook post that he was detained at the Kota Kinabalu district police headquarters. He expressed surprise at being detained there instead of giving his statement at the Dang Wangi police station as scheduled.
A video shared on Facebook depicts Dr. Muhamad Akmal being escorted by police officers into an SUV. Dr. Akmal was reportedly saying, "No fear, no surrender," before entering the police vehicle.
Dr. Akmal had been actively advocating for action and a boycott against KK Mart due to the "Allah" socks controversy. Additionally, there were calls for his arrest following a social media post showing him holding a sword.
Initially, the IGP had stated that there was no ongoing investigation into Dr. Akmal, citing the absence of any filed reports against him. However, various parties, including former law minister Datuk Zaid Ibrahim and human rights group Lawyers for Liberty, questioned the requirement for a formal report to prompt police action.
His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim, the King of Malaysia, has urged all parties to refrain from exploiting the issue and inciting unrest, emphasizing that authorities have already taken appropriate action.
Razarudin also cautioned against speculation regarding the "Allah" socks controversy, highlighting that the matter has been addressed through legal proceedings.
