A recent social media post shared by a netizen has shed light on a distressing experience she encountered while travelling with AirAsia. The incident involved a flight delay due to technical issues, which subsequently led to a harrowing situation at the check-in counter.
A Facebook user named Elyon Ooi had purchased her AirAsia ticket through Shopee Treveloka. On the day of travelling, she found out that the flight was delayed due to a technical issue. Still, she went to check in at the counter an hour before the flight. She was shocked to find that all the seats on the flight had already been assigned and she had lost her seat.
She questioned the counter staff about the reasons behind this unexpected turn of events. According to the staff, it turned out that AirAsia's system operates on a "first come first served" basis for passengers who do not pay to select their seats during booking. The system automatically assigns seats to such passengers, but there's a catch - it oversells tickets beyond the actual seating capacity. This means you might not be given a seat if the system did not assign you a seat before the plane was full.
Fellow netizens replied to her story, by highlighting the importance of buying plane tickets only from the official sites.
According to AirAsia website, "check in with the AirAsia Superapp opens 14 days before departure and closes 1 hour before departure. It closes 4 hours before departure for AirAsia X flights," with some exceptions. (Kindly refer to AirAsia website for more details.) "However, guests with checked baggage must do a baggage drop at least 60 minutes prior to the scheduled time of departure."
This firsthand account of losing a seat on AirAsia's oversold flight highlights the importance of understanding the intricacies of airline ticketing systems.
