Malaysia's last hope to bring home a gold medal, National track cyclist Muhammad Shah Firdaus Sahrom, has sped his way to the semi-finals of the mens keirin event today.
The 28-year-old Johorian managed to secure his advancement by taking third place in the event, just 0.051 seconds behind Jack Carlin of Great Britain aced his way to the top of the standings of the quarter-finals at the Saint-Quentin-en-Yvelines National Velodrome. Australian Matthew Glaetzer (+0.006s) completed the race in second place, with Japans Kaiya Ota finishing fourth to clinch the last quarterfinal spot.
During the competition, Firdaus managed to bounce back after being relegated to only compete in the repechage in the first round heat, due to the fact that he had been riding on the blue band of the track, and recieved a further warning after moving down towards the inner track, causing another competitor to veer off the track..
At the time of writing, the semi-finals are currently ongoing, with the finals of the mens keiring event being at 1:32pm (7:32pm Malaysian time)
