In an unusual case, a 37-year-old mechanic from Melaka was sentenced to seven days in jail after pleading guilty to assaulting his sister during an argument sparked by a seemingly trivial incident. The altercation occurred when Ridzuan Samsudin, the mechanic in question, jokingly passed gas while sitting in a parked car at the Lotus supermarket on Jalan Peringgit.
Ridzuan's sister, 32-year-old Nurul Hanis Samsudin, was unimpressed by his behavior and reprimanded him for what she deemed inappropriate conduct. What started as a light-hearted joke quickly took a darker turn as the siblings conversation escalated into a heated argument. Nurul, frustrated, brought up past grievances, further intensifying the situation.
In response, Ridzuan lost his temper and assaulted his sister, punching her in both the nose and mouth. Nurul sustained facial injuries, including bleeding and swelling, and later filed a police report. A medical examination confirmed that she had suffered tissue damage from the assault.
Ridzuan was subsequently charged under Section 323 of the Penal Code, which covers offenses involving the infliction of bodily harm. The charge carries a maximum penalty of up to two years in prison or a fine. During his court appearance, Ridzuan pleaded for leniency, citing his responsibilities as a father of six. However, Magistrate Khairunnisak Hassni handed down a seven-day jail sentence for the assault.
This incident serves as a reminder of how quickly minor disagreements can escalate into violent altercations, leading to serious consequences.
