It is truly heart-wrenching for a family from Sungai Petani as a 77-year-old senior citizen and her 2-year-old grandchild are believed to have drowned in an abandoned pool in Taman Kempas late yesterday evening. The District Police Chief of Kuala Muda, Assistant Commissioner Zaidy Che Hassan, issued a statement stating that the bodies of both victims were discovered by customers at a restaurant near the pool. The police received the information at around 7:20 in the evening.
He mentioned, "Officers from the Tikam Batu Police Station arrived at the scene to find both victims floating in the one-meter-deep pool. The victims were retrieved with the assistance of the public." According to interviews with the deceased's family, it was revealed that the child used to go for walks every evening with his grandfather after being picked up from his mother, who works at a restaurant in Taman Kempas.
Furthermore, the results of the examination of the victims and the scene showed no signs of foul play. The bodies of the victims were taken to Sultan Abdul Halim Hospital. It is understood that the grandchild of the deceased, Muhammad Ziyaaf Mikhail Muhammad Yuzarith, dismounted from a motorcycle and immediately ran towards the pool. Seeing his grandchild fall, Azmi Abdullah, the grandfather, rushed towards the pool in an attempt to save him but also tragically drowned.
The mother of Ziyaaf mentioned that her son had spent the entire day with her, being affectionate and hugging her before being picked up by his father. She stated, "Yesterday, my child spent the whole day with me. He was affectionate and hugged me before my father came to pick him up at around 5 in the evening." "Shortly after, I was shocked by the news that my father and son were found drowned in the pool near the restaurant."
Reportedly, the incident was first noticed by the child's father, Muhammad Yuzarith Martin Abdullah, 37, after he realized that his only child and father-in-law had not returned home by 7 in the evening. He went out to search for them in the vicinity of the abandoned pool and was devastated to discover their lifeless bodies floating in the pool. Even more heart-wrenching, the mother, Zarina Azmi, 34, mentioned that Ziyaaf was her only child after waiting for nearly 9 years to welcome him into the world. However, she has come to terms with the loss of her child and husband simultaneously.
