A man from Kampung Melaka, Mukim Sok, found himself in an excruciating situation after a gold-plated ring became stuck on his right finger, causing severe pain, injury, and even infection. For nearly a week, the 40-year-old endured the discomfort as his efforts to remove the ring himself failed, leaving his finger swollen and dangerously close to amputation.
Unable to bear the pain any longer, the man sought assistance at the Sik Fire and Rescue Station (BBP Sik) around 12:09 PM. According to Assistant Fire Superintendent Zulkhairi Mat Tanjil, who heads the BBP Sik, the man arrived at the station with his finger severely swollen, lacerated, and emitting a foul odour due to the infection.
"Realizing the severity of the situation, our team immediately referred him to the Emergency Unit at Sik Hospital for an initial assessment," Zulkhairi explained. Senior Fire Officer II Matzuki Mat Noh, who was leading the operation, made the call to ensure that the man's condition was stable enough before proceeding with the ring removal.
Once cleared by the hospital, a team of six firefighters arrived with specialized equipment to carefully cut through the ring. The delicate operation took nearly 30 minutes, as the team worked meticulously to avoid causing further injury to the already damaged finger.
Zulkhairi further revealed that the man had initially tried for several days to remove the ring on his own, which only worsened the situation. The prolonged attempt led to increased swelling and eventually caused the finger to become infected.
We strongly advise the public against forcing tight rings onto their fingers or attempting to remove stuck rings without professional help, Zulkhairi said. "If you find yourself in a similar situation, its crucial to seek assistance from the Fire Department immediately. Our trained personnel are equipped to handle such situations safely and efficiently."
After the ring was successfully removed, the man was handed over to healthcare personnel for further medical treatment. His ordeal serves as a reminder of the risks associated with tight-fitting rings and the importance of seeking prompt professional help to avoid serious injury.
