Basically the houseplants could be differentiated into three main categories: full sun, semi shade and full shade plants. Houseplants in the category of full sun plants means the plants should receive at least 8 hours of sunlight exposure to sustain. And semi shade means the plant need receiving at least 4 hours of indirect sunlight exposure to survive. Therefore, houseplants categorised in full shade plants are suitable to place inside the house and full sun plants should avoid to be placed indoors!
Succulent Plant
Except the aloe Vera and Sansevieria (snake plants) most of the succulent plants are not suitable to place indoors. The stem of succulent plants placed indoors will show shade avoidance response and its stem will elongate longer than usual. At last the succulent plant will become droopy and affect its aesthetic value. Besides that, because it is placed indoors and the transpiration rate becomes lower and if we don't reduce the watering amount, it will easily cause over watering. And too much water will make the roots and stem of succulent plants rotten and die easily.
Flowering plant
Most of the flowering plants belong to full sun plants too. And it is not suitable to place indoors either. Plants will start flowering when exposed to red light and far red light in a suitable proportion. Therefore, if we place houseplants inside the house, it will reduce the red light receiving by the plant s and stop the plants flowering. However, some flowering plants are exceptions, they may adapt to semi shade conditions like gardenia, Radermachera, Kalanchoe blossfeldiana etc. Those flowering plants could survive by receiving filtered sunlight only.
Herbs
Most of the herb plants prefer full sun exposure. Placing the herbs plants indoors will affect its plant constituents. The main constituents of herbs or we call it active ingredient in the herbs plants will increase with exposure to the strong sunlight or high UV light . Therefore, if the herb is used for culinary purposes, then we should leave it under the sun even though it could survive under shade too.
In conclusion, we cannot simply buy any potted plant and bring it back without thinking about the natural adaptability of the plant to the environment. Unsuitable environment will make the plants grow poorly and easily wilting. If you choose the right place for your houseplants, you may do minimal care for your plants and let it grow itself happily and healthily.
