Little Women: A Classic Brought to Life or Ruined by The Screen?

Are you wondering what you could do this weekend? Well, if you are considering watching a movie and you are a fan of classic novels, here is something that you should really watch: The live adaptation of the classic, 【The Little Women】, by Louisa May Alcott.

Have you taken a look at the list of actresses? It does seem promising enough, does it not?

Emma Watson As Meg March

If you have ever read the book and picture to yourself how the most beautiful of the March sister should look like, surely Emma Watson is what you would have imagined her to be.

Young and beautiful, she is the exact picture of how the wife of a poor teacher should be, trying to content herself with the little things she has and not to be too vain about her looks.

One would have thought, though, that there is something lacking in the way Emma treated her twins, something short of the natural love of mothers towards their children. But is it not her being young and struggling with how to cope with having twins?

Saoirse Ronan As Jo March

Saoirse Ronan, tall and slim, just the perfect person to play the boyish Jo.

It was such a delight to see her as she stomped about and use the most "slangy" words. There is, however, some differences in Jo's passion for writing in the movie. Jo writes to make Beth happy and to earn money for her family. She eventually burned her writings when Beth died when she thought them no longer capable to bring laughter to anyone.

Was it not touching than when she started writing again to put down all her life in ink so that everyone could remember Beth? Or does some of the fans of the novel beg to disagree that somehow selling her life as a story makes Jo March seem less worthy of praise?

Eliza Scanlen As Beth March

Eliza, with her modest looks, is the quiet and musical Beth. It is all very fine that she should be afraid of the old Mr. Laurence though she is most comfortable with Laurie.

But does it not appear to some that she is indeed very awkward sometimes, even a little too marked for her shyness? Or could it be that shyness could have overpowered someone so much that they become awkward?

Florence Pugh As Amy March

Amy, vain about her nose and full of great ambitions, was perfectly portrayed by Florence Pugh.

The youngest and the most petted of the sisters, Amy was not embarrassed to acknowledge that she has mercenary designs in marriage. However, could Laurie have fallen in love with two sisters that are so different?

In short, there are so many opinions on how the characters should be. Some would have loved it to be just according to the book, just like how Louisa May Alcott have painted them. However, is there not something more realistic in the four March sisters in the movie?

Watch and be a judge yourself.

The characters may have been a little different but it is still such a warm and cozy movie without any theatrical romance. It is just how the author must have wanted it to be, the tale of four sisters growing up into their father's little women.
