The living space is where we spend most of our time ; no matter in our home or in our working places. However, not all of us have taken notice of the above fact. We allow ourselves to work in spaces that might cause sick building syndrome that affect our health. We also allow the release of air pollutants (organic volatile pollutants) released from the vehicles, motor, cosmetics, cleaning materials occupied in the air of our living spaces. We ignored the important facts and allowed ourselves to live in a not so comfortable space. Actually, we may twist the facts and solve the problem easily. We just need to insert some indoor plants into our living spaces to improve the air quality and in the mean times upgrade the ambient of the house. However, we need some techniques and apply some principles to make the plant decor and plant arrangement look comfortable and upgrade its aesthetic value. If we lack the basic principles of the plant decor design, the arrangement may make the house look messy and complicated.
Size, Ratio and Balance
First of all, we have to measure the space available for placing the plants before making any purchase. A big space placing a small plant or a small space placing a big size plant will be considered as imbalance design. Unless you want the potted plant to be the focal point of your whole home décor. Otherwise, If the plant is too small, the plant decor will easily be ignored. If the space is small but the plant is too big, the plants decor will seem very crowded and messy. So, it is better to choose a suitable size that occupies around 70% only of the available space and leave some space for indoor plants to grow.
The indoor plants usually are slow growing plants and may take several months to grow a little bit higher. Therefore, if your space is too big, but you have bought the small size potted plants. Then, you may use a rack to alleviate the potted indoor plants to make it visible. Other techniques that may be used to place small size potted indoor plants in big space is placing a few of small potted plants in groups. It may attract the attention of others too.
Repetition and Focal Point
Too many different types of houseplant in the whole design may create the feeling of being messy. Therefore, we may use repetition principle to make the whole design look more simple. However, if you love to collect different types of houseplants, you may choose the indoor plants from the same family but different varieties of plant. They have similar leaves shape and texture but different leaves colour. However, if your design styles are more prone to minimalist or Muji styles, then you may try to use a focal point as your plant's décor design. You may place a single pot of indoor plant in the whole wall or window sill and leave a blank on the other spaces. We may make use of a plant rack to alleviate the indoor plants and artificial lighting to make the plant décor become the focal point in the whole space.
Colour of the Plants
Besides that, we may make use of different colours of indoor plants to break the monotonousness of the whole plant décor design. By different décor design, we may mix different colour of the houseplant like green, purple, pink or red to create the variation according to the different demand about the décor style. If you prefer green colour leaves plants, you may use different tones of green leaves plants like light green, dark green, brown green or army green to create variation. Using a different tone of green colour could break the monotonousness of the plant décor design effectively too.
Texture and form of the Plants
Texture of the plants means the different size and shape of the leaves; small leaves have finer texture and big leaves with bolder texture. Besides that, dangling vines and up straight plants may create different forms of the plants. By using the combination of the fine and bolder texture of the indoor plants to break the monotonousness of the design. On the other hand, we may use repetition of arrangement for similar texture indoor plants to create a neat and simple feel for the interior design. Besides that, the same principles may apply to using different forms of indoor plants. Using an up straight plant mix with a dangling indoor plant.
Indoor plants are the most suitable home décor because it is not only possessive of the aesthetic value, the indoor plants have other benefits compared to the other home décor. Indoor plants could purify the air pollutants, release the anion to neutralise the positive ion in the air, releasing phytoncides which could make people feel released and relax etc. Indoor plants have been proven by scientific research that could reduce a lot of minor health problems and improve our life quality effectively. Therefore, we should integrate the indoor plants in our daily life and maximize its uses.
