Since the start of the Russian invasion of Ukraine in February, thousands of Ukrainians have taken flight to neighbouring countries in the hope of fleeing the war. However, a few have decided to stay and still make Ukraine their home, including one gallant Ukrainian.

The owner of a local cat cafe The Cat Cafe Lviv, Serhii Oliinyk, keeps his door open to anyone looking for shelter and an uplift in their emotions. Despite all the uncertainties of war, Oliinyk continues to provide a safe haven for other Ukrainians in the form of feline therapy and does not plan to cease the operation.

"We currently have fewer regular visitors, but there are people who have come from other cities and need hot food and positive emotions," Oliinyk told The Dodo. "There are three large rooms in our cafe, two of which are located in the basement, so in case of an air raid warning, there is a safe shelter for our guests and cats."

The cafe currently houses over 20 cats who have been under Oliinyk's care ever since they were a few months old, and are now considered a part of his family. It's true what they say: you simply don't leave families behind.
